Engaging in physically demanding activities, like sports, speeds up the metabolism. As this happens, the body requires the right amount of nutrition to fuel this demand. Thus, people who are engaged in sports, either as a form of leisure or as a profession, need to follow a certain diet.
The number one nutritional requirement of a good sports diet is carbohydrates. Just as an engine will function best with a full tank of the right fuel, the body will perform best when supplied with a good amount of carbohydrates. The greater the energy the body gets from this nutrient, the longer it can sustain great physical demands and delay exhaustion. Meanwhile, the second important nutritional requirement of people who are playing sports is fluids. These fluids or liquids have many important functions in the body. This includes the transportation of nutrients, lubrication of joints and tissues, and regulation of temperature through sweating. Hence, everyone must always have a bottle of a healthy drink when playing sports.
This need for fluids can be satisfied by ordinary water, but athletes who are undergoing intensive sports training or are playing a very demanding game need more than this. Fluids that contain a good amount of electrolytes can help sustain the balance between water and free ions in the body, boosting performance in return. Meanwhile, liquid that contains sodium and potassium helps satisfy thirst and replace electrolyte losses.
